Niamh gives us her list of the best places around Ōtepoti Dunedin to explore, shop, visit and experience.

St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool

What is Dunedin’s best beach?

I think St Clair Beach is the best beach in Dunedin. You have easy access down to the water from the esplanade, which features restaurants such as Starfish, Salt and Esplanade. It is such a versatile spot with the salt water pools just down the end of the beach.

A bowl of food at a Japanese restaurant.

What is the best place to dine out in Dunedin?

My absolute favourite place to eat in Dunedin has to be The Jitsu, located on lower Stuart Street in Central Dunedin. Japanese cuisine has always and will continue to be my favourite and you cannot go wrong here.

Nichol's Garden Cafe

Dunedin does coffee well. Where do you like to get yours from and what’s your order?

I don’t often go out for coffee but when I do, I go to Nichol's Garden Café and order an iced caramel latte and pair that with a cinnamon scroll (these are to die for).

A woman raises her cocktail at Graze and Glow.

Best place for a pre/post-event drink?

The best place to go for drinks is definitely Graze and Glow. I went there for cocktails with my family after my Opa's 90th birthday and they were so hospitable. With everything being $9, this is a super budget friendly and classy place.

Carey's Bay Historic Hotel

Your number one Dunedin must-do or place you’d take friends or family who are visiting?

If you are travelling to Dunedin and are looking for a place to go for super fresh seafood, then the Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel is the place for you. I LOVE their Stewart Island Salmon Fillet and I try and order that every time I go. This place is a perfect little escape just beyond Port Chalmers with views looking out over to the peninsula. I highly recommend it.

A couple at Signal Hill Lookout admire a view of the city.

Best hidden gem?

The best hidden gem in my opinion is Signal Hill Lookout. You can see the whole of Dunedin from this one location and the view at sunset is honestly breathtaking. I enjoy going up there with my friends and just taking it all in.

Plum store

What’s your favourite Dunedin boutique or designer?

I’m a proud second-hand shopper and always find it super exciting when I can score a Dunedin designer item from labels such as Charmaine Reveley and Nom*D.

Toitu

Where do you go for a little bit of culture?

Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is a must! My ancestors feature on the photo wall, and I love the old vehicles and how interactive it is.
