Who needs theme parks when Ōtepoti Dunedin has so many amazing activities and attractions for families to explore? A place that truly captures the imagination of young minds, Dunedin is where gothic architecture meets beach-laden coastlines, with wild things, hands-on science fun, a castle, and the world’s steepest street. Read on for school holiday specials and free activities valid 26 September – 11 October, unless otherwise stated.

Kids go free at Larnach

Enjoy a family day out at Larnach Castle exploring the magical spring gardens and interiors. Kids go free at Larnach Castle during the spring school school holidays, with a paying adult.

Dinosaur rEvolution

From 3 October

Family deal (ongoing): Adults at kids’ prices – a flat rate of $10 per person and $25 multi-entry passes

Get up close to giant animatronic dinosaurs, skulls, skeletons and fossil casts at this exciting new international exhibition at the Otago Museum. Opening in the second week of the spring school holidays, there will be a whole host of extra activities in and around the museum for families to engage with, including communal art projects, planetarium shows, a dino disco and fossil finding.

Orokonui Ecosanctuary scale trail

School holiday deal: Special entry price of $10 per person or $30 per family for an all-day pass

Explore all things scaly to be found within Orokonui’s cloud forest, including reptiles, moths and plants using a treasure trail activity pack. Uncover hidden creatures and attend one of the daily kids’ workshops at 1pm.

OCHO craft chocolate factory

Visit Dunedin's own artisan chocolate factory for a tasting like no other. Kids will be treated to free chocolate milks with any tasting during the school holidays.  Tasting sessions:  Friday, Saturday and Sunday (11am, 1pm and 2pm) at $10 per person.

Dunedin Public Art Gallery – free activity

Map Making :Using the map of the Otago Peninsula provided on A4 sheets, imagine you are a bird looking down from the sky and draw in the places you know and like: the aquarium, the albatross colony, seals on beaches, penguins, portobello, the bike track and any other area you visit or would love to visit. In association with the exhibition A Land of Granite: McCahon and Otago.

Explore the eye-lands – free activity book: There are six exciting Eye-Lands to explore with Silky (the dog) in our free activity book (which comes with a free Art Gallery pencil). Adventure around the Style & Substance exhibition finding artworks, drawing pictures, make some money, create a cafe, and there is a lot of counting to do and more. Once you have completed the challenges of each Eye-Land go to reception and receive a reward.

Toitū Otago Settlers Museum- free activity

During the spring school holidays, the museum is celebrating te reo Māori. Explore museum artefacts, learn about important places in Otago and see traditional Māori designs. Daily from 10am - 4pm. There's also a kids trail booklet which challenges them to find items tucked away in the displays.
