What to do on a rainy day in Dunedin?

Visiting with Children

Take them swimming for the morning or afternoon at Moana Pool which has a fantastic range of facilities; check out for hours and rates (website link to pool pages) Or between the end of October to end March enjoy the experience of swimming in the rain at the St Clair heated salt water pool.

There is a cafe that over looks the pool where non swimmers can relax with a coffee and observe the swimmers

Lunch options are endless

From Moana pool come down the hill into the city where the choices range from the branded fast food outlets, mall food courts to cafes and restaurants.

Then off to the Otago Museum to visit Discovery World and the Tropical Forest with the Live Butterfly Experience or visit the Otago Settlers Museum for a glimpse back into Otago's past Displays include an accurate recreation of the steerage quarters of an immigrant ship bound for Otago in the days of sail.

Alternatively, enjoy a trip on the Taieri Gorge Train, as equally good experience on a wet day as fine day. With each accompanying adult one child travels free of charge and the additional children only $21.00 each. Departures: October to end of April: 9.30am and 2.30pm, May to end September: 12.30pm daily. Book at i-SITE Visitor Centre to ensure a seat.

Once you've done all these, head out onto the Peninsula to the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre and Aquarium and view marine life from the southern NZ waters including Octopus, seahorses, crayfish, sharks and many more. Enjoy getting your hands wet in the spectacular touch tanks.

If your young enquiring minds now have lots of questions, visit the public library where they can search out the answers.

Tips: The wildlife around our peninsula is sub Antarctic, so it can be a good idea just to wrap up warm and put rain jackets on and head out on tours to Albatross, Penguins, Seals and many more who are enjoying the conditions and will probably reward you with good viewing.

TIPS

Dunedin is home to some of the rarest wildlife in the World!

If you're coming to Dunedin make sure you check out the Otago Peninsula.
