Dunedin City Itineraries

Day One

(Wednesday to Sunday)

  • Drive out to Port Chalmers. Some of the quirky designers in Port are bound to take your fancy and interspersed are second hand shops and beautiful locally designed jewellery. The art galleries include works by esteemed local artists such as Ralph Hotere, Simon Kaan, Philip Maxwell, Tony Walker and many more.

  • Pop into Carey's Bay Hotel for lunch and admire the view and the Hoteres before driving out to Aramoana for a walk along the Spit.

 Day Two

  • Start with brunch at a cafe in the Octagon before taking a stroll through the Art Gallery. You will see European Masters, including Monet, Turner and Pissarro. You will see textiles, Japanese prints and ceramics. And, perhaps best of all, you will see a shop! The Art Gallery shop has an eclectic range of beautiful and quirky merchandise.

  • Stray a little further afield for a delicious lunch, and then take in some of the jewellery workshops and local clothing design stores in the Central Business District. These are all in easy walking distance and when your arms are laden with bags, you can head back to your accommodation for a rest before dinner and dancing.

Day Three

  • For a day of antique browsing, there are auction houses and second hand shops all around the city. South Dunedin is a good place to start with many eclectic op shops the length of King Edward Street.

  • Have lunch at one of the tiny cafes in South Dunedin and head back into town for more second hand shopping. The op shops and auction houses near the Exchange will surprise you with bargains, whether you are looking for furniture, fine china or knick-knacks.

  • Just off George Street, you can find more second hand shops with brand name clothing, beautifully restored furniture and pretty china

TIPS
