Dunedin’s nightspots are up there with the best. Mou Very and Inch Bar are the smallest and quirkiest; Copa, Carousel and Toast are generally popular; while Pequeno, Albar and Tonic are favoured by the professional set.

Moon Bar’s Leggie does the best cocktails in town.

Dunedin is the definitive student party town. Hunker down at Scarfie haunts the Captain Cook, ReFuel or South Bar. Try the Speight’s Ale House, the Craic, or the Duke of Wellington for a true pint.

Members of the younger demographic dance into the wee small hours at 10 Bar, Urban Factory and Bath Street.

Dunedin is New Zealand’s indie music incubator, and birthplace of the ‘Dunedin Sound’. So catch a live act during O-Week, or at the fabled Chicks Hotel.

Music

The heyday of Dunedin’s music scene was the 1980s - early 1990s, when the so-called ‘Dunedin Sound’ bands and closely related Flying Nun record label rocked local and indie airwaves.

The Clean, The Chills, the Verlaines, Straitjacket Fits, Sneaky Feelings and 3Ds were actually quite different, but all relied to some extent on the use of reverb and ‘jangle’.

The Southern Sinfonia caters to more classical tastes.
