Carey's Bay Pub
Wednesday, 18 January 2012
If you are after the complete experience and you want to eat some of the freshest sea food in town then the Carey’s Bay Pub is the place to go to.
After a quick 15min drive from the centre of town, I was at Carey’s Bay Pub. Since 1874 this heritage building has been a pub, and I imagine it being the kind of place that sailors would come and have a few beers after a big day out at sea or on the port. As times have changed so has the Carey’s Bay Pub……well just a little.
This Family run pub is owned by John and Mary Kidston and their daughter Jo. They pride themselves on having some of Dunedin’s freshest and best sea food and local hospitality in town.
Meeting head chef Johnny Dain in the kitchen this week was a real experience. When I was chatting to him about how he sources his food locally, people where literally bringing fresh herbs and produce from down the road straight to the kitchen door!
Some of the dishes you must try are: The Sea food platters, Seafood Chowder. Don’t forget the “Specials Board” as this is where Johnny shows his culinary talent with whatever he gets in fresh that day. And don’t worry meat eaters they do a bang up steak and a spiced pork belly to keep you happy.
So when you’re out to try something new or just thinking of heading out for a weekend drive, pop in and have some of Carey’s Bays great coffee, local beers and wines and a bite to eat.
