Madly British

After his Christchurch restaurants were destroyed in the Christchurch earthquake restaurateur Ronnie Bhogal turned his attention to Dunedin. The result is Madly British – a funky British-themed restaurant with a strong charity emphasis.
Madly British is a proud supporter of local cricket and rugby, as well as raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation. For every coffee brought at Madly British, a $1 is donated to the foundation, and $3 for every high tea. Ronnie hopes to raise $50,000 for the foundation by October 2012.
Madly British is something new to the city and for Ronnie as well – he owned Two Fat Indians in Christchurch. Despite being new territory Ronnie has taken the concept and embraced it right down to the HP sauce, mushy peas, cucumber sandwiches, toad in a hole, and an Englishman’s curry.
Because of the diversity of the menu Ronnie employs three chefs, each bringing their own specialist skills to the kitchen so diners get the best tastes out of each dish.
The place lives up to its name. There is Queen Victory Sponge Cake – just the way the Queen would have it. On top of that there is an extensive range of teas, including Prince William and Kate’s wedding tea which was specially blended for the big day, and of course there is the popular tea loaf.
Ronnie tells me he set up the restaurant just before the Rugby World Cup and has been busy ever since – and it’s easy to see why. The selection of local and imported beers is tempting in itself, the chocolate beer sounds very interesting, bring in the food and everything about the place is spot on.
You can’t help but be impressed with Madly British. Well worth a visit.
