Dunedin has an approximate population of 122,000 residents. The student population of 23,000 adds vibrancy and cultural diversity to the city, making it an exciting place to visit.

Shopping

The main shopping area is George Street in the city centre. There are also many out of town shops and craft outlets. Shopping in Dunedin is relaxed and unhurried. There is a mix of national and chain stores, a large shopping mall and a highly eclectic mix of Dunedin designer fashion, art and jewellery stores. Antique furniture, china and book shops are scattered throughout the city with a concentration of them in Princes Street.

Dunedin is evolving as a fashion frontier for new and innovative designers. The annual id Dunedin Fashion Show attracts visitors and media from around New Zealand and Australia, eager to see the latest creations of Dunedin designers.

Shops catering for visitor needs tend to be open longer than the hours detailed above.

The café/wine bar scene is well established in Dunedin with a focus around the Octagon and North City George Street areas.
