Dunedin is situated on State Highway One, New Zealand's main arterial route. Using the highway, Dunedin can be reached from either Christchurch in the north or Invercargill in the south.

Road conditions are excellent. Local roads are of good quality, and uncongested. A few gravel roads exist in rural areas. New Zealanders drive on the left hand side of the road. The following estimated driving times allow for "comfort" stops but not sightseeing.
